Place value and the four operations: a course for teaching assistants

Teaching assistants play a key role in helping children succeed in maths, and this course will look at how concrete and pictorial methods can help children to work towards written methods in the four operations. These methods offer a powerful method for learning, and the course will help delegates to understand Place Value and how to use concrete resources to make numbers. It will also look at:

– Number bonds- how to make them stick.
– Addition and subtraction- the journey from KS1 to KS2, including how to help children understand column method with resources and understand exchanging between columns.
– Multiplication-learning key facts and applying this to written methods.
– Division- moving from sharing to grouping and understanding the short division method.
